Digital team delivers new transit websites and apps for GoTriangle and Valley Metro

20 February 2018

Over the past year our digital team has been working closely with GoTriangle in Durham, NC, and Valley Metro in Phoenix, AZ, to design and deliver new transit websites and apps. Both agencies had outdated websites and required new user-centered approaches to design and deliver key passenger information. In addition, both clients wanted to simplify the way their websites are managed – including the processing of complicated schedule data and integration of Rider Alerts with Google Maps and the website.

While each project was approached with its user in mind, we took similar approaches to discovering who their key user base was, their requirements and how the site could best serve them. Both projects included an initial ‘deep dive’ into current rider behaviors and the creation of user personas and business goals.

We took a ‘mobile first’ approach to user experience and interface design – Valley Metro’s existing user base predominately used mobile to access their existing website (over 80% of website visits). Supported by our user experience partners, The Glue, we delivered a comprehensive wireframing process for Valley Metro that prioritized key rider tools such as the trip planner and real-time information.

GoTriangle had its own challenges – particularly the display of easily accessible online schedules for seven transit partners. We took seven data files (in the GTFS format) and worked with our data partner, Mecatran, to fully automate the way that the website updates its schedules, without the need for complicated client interventions, as well as the automated processing and emailing of Rider Alerts. The redesigned site has resulted in a 60% up kick in visitors since going live on February 1st, 2018.

“Working on the GoTriangle site, the Steer Davies Gleave team made sure we started and ended the project with the focus on who our users are and what information they need quickly. At every turn Steer Davies Gleave made sure that we kept this at the forefront of any conversations and decisions. Their user-centered approach was exactly what we needed as a transit agency and has helped us to launch a successful platform that we look forward to using and building upon moving forward,” said GoTriangle Marketing Manager, Wendy Mallon.

Finally, we were asked by Valley Metro to overhaul their ‘Ridekick’ iOS and Android apps to provide fully accessible rider tools – including new trip planning and real-time information tools. We worked closely with Valley Metro to ensure that modern smartphone screen readers could provide meaningful information to blind and partially sighted users using audio cues.

“Steer Davies Gleave has been an amazing partner throughout the project. They have constantly provided us with amazing customer service, helped us find solutions to our many data challenges and designed a sleek, modern and customer-focused website and app that we are very happy with,” noted Valley Metro Marketing Manager, Gricel Ferreyra.
