Artesia Station TOD Specific Plan

17 February 2018

Steer Davies Gleave is working with a multi-disciplinary team, led by SOM to develop a Transit Oriented District Specific Plan for the City of Compton around Metro’s Artesia Blue Line station. The City is looking for this project to create a new node of economic activity that has a unique sense of place, taking into account future adjacent opportunities for culture, arts and entertainment.

The station is surrounded by a casino, big box retail style mall and is near Compton College. Challenges include a difficult pedestrian environment and blocked eastern access from the station due to the casino, while a bordering underutilized creek poses an interesting opportunity.

Steer Davies Gleave’s role focuses on transportation and mobility aspects. This includes first/last mile design principles, active transportation options for Compton Creek enhancements and connections, parking reduction strategies and a transit service expansion study, strategies for the construction of a joint parking facility, and financing mechanism proposals for recommendations.

As part of our work on the project, we are also leading a community outreach workshop to discuss “A Multimodal Lifestyle”. We have begun work on this workshop by conducting intercept interviews of residents and transit users in the station area and throughout the TOD study area. These interviews will help form the beginning narratives of the station’s existing conditions and help to formulate upcoming workshop.
