Transportation and crowd flow modelling for Arsenal's Emirates Stadium
Steer Davies Gleave was commissioned by Arsenal Football Club in July 2000 to provide expert advice on the planning and design of the proposed new Arsenal Stadium at Ashburton Grove.
Our role on the project has involved a wide range of areas of work including Transport Assessments for each site, infrastructure planning and design, crowd flow and emergency evacuation analysis, Signage and Wayfinding, car parking, servicing arrangements and the transportation elements of the Environmental Impact Assessment.
How we did it
A comprehensive transportation strategy covering all modes of transport has been developed for event-days, demonstrating the ability of the local public transport facilities to cope with the peak demands of specific travel patterns generated by major events at the new stadium. Any necessary improvements to public transport services/infrastructure have been identified and planned.
Steer Davies Gleave has remained involved with the monitoring of the Stadium Travel Plan for the three seasons (2006-2009) continued after the new stadium existence. A major success of the transport strategy for the stadium is that significantly fewer cars are being used by spectators to attend the Emirates Stadium than for Highbury.
As part of the work, Steer Davies Gleave was commissioned to deliver pedestrian wayfinding and a transport communication strategy for new 60,000 capacity Emirates Stadium. We supplied a full schedule of signs and negotiated approvals with TfL, Department for Transport, First Capital Connect and LBI. This included gaining type approval from DfT for the non-standard highway pedestrian sign designs. The pedestrian and transport network was translated onto a range of maps published on the website, distributed to supporters, and located at key nodes around the stadium including local underground stations.
During 2009 Steer Davies Gleave presented evidence at the successful Coach Parking Public Inquiry. We also prepared the Transport Assessment for the large residential and sports centre development adjacent to Emirates Stadium.
