LRT system extension for the City of Edmonton

City of Edmonton

The City of Edmonton is planning to complete an 11km Light Rail Transit (LRT) system extension from NAIT Station to the northwest city limits and the City of St. Albert.

Our role

Steer Davies Gleave was appointed in 2011 to develop the design for the LRT, stops and roadway configuration and the significant bridged crossing of the CN Walker Rail yard.

How we did it

Extensive consultation has been integral to producing a design that meets the needs of the users, the public, stakeholders and operators while aligning with City policy.

This has required effective communication between the project team and internal and external stakeholders through public open houses and stakeholder workshops, both of which have provided an opportunity for comments. Reflection on how best to integrate the needs of each group and how to mesh this with technical/operational requirements has been achieved through iterative design changes.

The final concept plan production will require sufficient justification for the City of Edmonton to approve the project at City council. This project will proceed into preliminary engineering when funding is secured.
