Development of the Amman Bus Rapid Transit Project

Greater Amman Municipality

Slideshow image

The city of Amman is faced with a rapidly growing population that is forecast to double by 2025 from its present 2.4 million inhabitants, a growth which will be unsustainable for its car-dominated transport system. To address this, the Greater Amman Municipality wanted to develop a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system for the city.

Our role

Steer Davies Gleave were commissioned by the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) to conduct the comprehensive design and planning of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system which would provide the much needed “paradigm shift” in public transport services in the city of Amman by the end of 2010.

Working with local partners, we worked on:

  • All aspects of engineering and operational design
  • Patronage forecasts and appraisal
  • The business, institutional and regulatory set-up to deliver the scheme

How we did it

At Steer Davies Gleave we understand that a local presence is important. Our Project Manager, based in Amman, was able to gain a detailed insight into the characteristics of the city, coordinate and lead meetings with GAM, and organise design charettes with key local decision makers.

With our robust approach to forecasting we utilised our demand modelling expertise to modify a locally developed model. This helped to guide the type of BRT services we recommend, and will also help GAM to seek funding from an international development agency. The scheme is scheduled to open in 2011.
