Developing venue transport strategies for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games
Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Government
Steer Davies Gleave developed transport strategies for seven competition venues and reviewed the transport strategies for eight other competition venues.
How we did it
SDG staff spent eight weeks based in Brisbane working with the client to develop the optimum transport strategy for each of the seven competition venues. This involved extensive site visits and workshops with the client, local organising committee (GOLDOC), transport operators, local authorities, venue owners and the emergency services to identify the optimum transport arrangements for each venue.
With venues spread across Queensland, the project involved setting up and delivering stakeholder workshops in the cities of Cairns, Townsville, Brisbane and Gold Coast. Steer Davies Gleave staff used their considerable venue transport experience, backed up by technical analysis, to deliver venue transport strategies that were agreed by all stakeholders within a period of only three months.
The transport strategies covered transport arrangements for all client groups including athletes, team officials, technical officials, media, Commonwealth Games Family, spectators and workforce. This included arrangements for vehicle access, load zones, parking and staging locations, spectator routes and public transport operations. A key part of this work was the integration of the transport arrangements with the security requirements of the Commonwealth Games, combined with minimising the impact on non-Games related accessibility of major tourist areas.
