Advisor to a bid team on the Northeast Anthony Henday Drive
Alberta Roads Construction
Steer Davies Gleave was traffic advisor to the bid team on the Northeast Anthony Henday Drive, the ring road in Edmonton, and developed traffic forecasts for the last section of the Drive.
The objective of the study was to develop long term (20, 30 and 50 year) ESAL (Equivalent Single Axle Load) values based on traffic forecasts for all the new segments of the project. These ESAL values subsequently informed the pavement design bid team in order to optimize the pavement design strategy.
Steer Davies Gleave's work included a comprehensive review of forecast traffic data in the region to determine future traffic volumes on Anthony Henday Drive and comparison to the Province's Functional Design Analysis.
How we did it
A traffic growth model was developed based on GDP and population which enabled projections to be made on future traffic levels. Of particular importance was the overall volume of trucks as these were the prime contributors to the lifetime ESAL values. Therefore, a variety of truck growth scenarios were tested and presented as part of the evaluation.
