Complete Street Designer / Active Transportation Planner (Ref: USPL15)

Steer Davies Gleave is an employee-owned international planning and design consultancy specializing in infrastructure, cities and transport. Established in 2015 our downtown office in Los Angeles continues to grow, and we are excited to announce a search for a Complete Street Designer / Active Transportation Planner to support our growing portfolio of planning and design work in North America.

Having delivered the Orange County Complete Street Initiative for Orange County Council of Governments and the Complete Streets Plan and Design Guidelines for Puerto Rico, as well as the Pedestrian and Bicycle Masterplan for Puerto Rico and the bicycle and pedestrian masterplan for the Greenway Plaza area of Houston, Texas we are currently working on a number of complete street projects and TOD plans in Los Angeles and Orange County.

You will have a passion for complete streets and active transportation, have creative flair, excellent technical abilities and be able to interpret and deliver briefs to a high standard. You will be able to work in a demanding environment on multiple tasks across a wide range of disciplines, including but not limited to urban design, transportation and complete streets, pedestrian and bike facilities, wayfinding, planning and design guidance within both the public and private sectors.

A degree in Urban / Regional Planning or Design, Landscape Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Transportation Engineering / Planning / Design, together with a flair for design is preferred. Experience of working on complete streets, first last mile pathways, pedestrian and cycling facilities, rapid transit corridors, station areas plans and TOD is desirable.

Essential Requirements

  • A degree in Urban / Regional Planning or Design, Landscape Architecture, Transportation Engineering / Planning / Design.
  • Working towards or holding appropriate professional registration in the State of California.
  • Informed of trends in active transportation and complete streets, as well as consulting opportunities.
  • Ability to lead and manage planning and design projects.
  • A creative thinker/ problem solver / able to get to the 'essence’ of a 'scope of work’ quickly.
  • Able to identify new clients and project opportunities.
  • Strong existing relationships with a wide range of relevant clients and stakeholders.
  • Proven success in preparing RfP responses.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, Sketch Up.
  • Ability to work in partnership across professions and sectors to deliver exemplary planning and design outcomes.
  • Ability and confidence to present and explain original ideas to the design team, stakeholders and clients.
  • Ability to facilitate and participate in design charettes and workshops.
  • Strong time management, excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Enjoy working in a high pressure, collaborative environment.
  • Fluent in English.

Desirable Requirements

  • Consulting experience in the State of California.
  • AICP certification.
  • Other languages (notably Spanish).
  • Previous experience working in the transportation sector / working with traffic and transport engineers.
  • Strong understanding of masterplanning and urban design.
  • Ability to prepare hand draw plans, graphics and illustrations.
  • GIS.
